How To Use a Laser Level To Square a Room

Are you moving into a new home and you want to ensure it’s square and perfect for use? Or do you want to make some serious renovations to your home? Or you want to hang a picture on your wall and you notice it’s not level. Then, a laser level can help ensure your room is squared. Using a laser to square a room is more accurate and faster. In this article, we will highlight simple steps on how to use a laser level to square a room.

Step By Step Guideline on How to Square A Room Using A Laser Level

Having the right information regarding squaring a room using a laser level will help you work faster and make your measurements more accurate. We will highlight the step-by-step guide on how to square a room using a laser level. Before you can achieve a perfectly square room, you would need to square the floor, ceilings, walls, and foundations. We will cover all that in this section.

Square The Room’s Floor

Follow the simple steps given below to square the room’s floor.

Step 1: Use your laser level to draw a vertical line in one of the wall’s middle. You can also use any accurate tool you have.

Step 2: Look for the room’s center. You can get the room’s center point by measuring from its corners. You should place your laser level at the center immediately after you locate it.

Step 3: You will then set up your laser level, turn it on and let it calibrate.

Step 4: Point one of the laser beams to the vertical line you drew on the wall initially.

Step 5: You will then set up your laser receiver to align with the other 90° laser beam your laser level produced.

Step 6: Use a peg or paint to mark where the laser beam goes.

Square The Room’s Walls

Use these simple steps to square the walls of the room.

Step 1: Use the wall mount that came with your laser level to hang it on one of the room’s walls at your preferred height.

Step 2: You will then use the inbuilt bubble level to ensure your laser level is leveled. However, this step can be skipped if you are using a self-leveling laser level

Step 3: Use your laser level or any other accurate tool to draw a horizontal line on the wall.

Step 4: You will then reflect the laser beam to your laser level using your laser receiver.

Step 5: Carefully adjust your laser level until the projected beam is aligned with the horizontal line you drew initially.

Step 6: Measure the distance from the laser beam to the floor using a measuring tape.

Step 7: Draw a line on the wall using chalk. Ensure the line is perpendicular to the floor line.

Square The Room’s Ceiling

Here are the simple steps you would use to square the ceiling of the room.

Step 1: Hang your laser level at your preferred height and turn it on.

Step 2: Then, carefully fix your laser level to project a vertical line onto the room’s ceiling.

Step 3: Locate the center of the laser beam on the room’s ceiling using a measuring tape. Then, mark it with chalk or pencil immediately after you find it.

Step 4: At the ceiling line, carefully measure and mark the width of the room.

Step 5: Use your laser level to make a horizontal line across the width of the room at the ceiling line.

Step 6: If the room’s ceiling is square related to its walls, then the line should cross the line you made at the center in step 3.

Square The Room’s Foundation

Squaring a room perfectly is not an easy task. This is because before the room’s walls can be squared, its foundation must be too. This means that the wall will not be squared if the foundation isn’t. Use the following steps to square the room’s foundation

Step 1: Measure from each corner of your foundation to find its center. Where the lines intersect is where you should mark as the center.

Step 2: Set your tripod at the center and mount your laser level.

Step 3: Level the last beam by using the adjustment screws.

Step 4: Extend the tripod’s legs until the laser beam levels with the foundation’s top.

Step 5: Make a line on the surface. Also, ensure this line is perpendicular to an edge center of the foundation.

Step 6: Move your laser level until its beam is perpendicular to the line in step 5.

Step 7: The laser level will make a 90° laser beam from the line you made in step 5.

Step 8: If you want your foundation to be squared perfectly, the distance from the foundation’s adjacent corners to where the two lines meet the foundation’s edges must be similar.

How Long Does It Take To Square a Room Using The Laser Level?

The time you take to square a room using a laser level depends on the type of laser level you use and the size of the room. While a small room size can be squared in minutes, you might use up to one hour or more for a large room size. Also, if your laser level is small and handheld, then it will take you a longer time to square the room compared to using a roof-mounted and larger laser level. Finally, the average time for squaring a room is between 20 to 30 mins.

Why You Should Square a Room

Squaring your room makes it look better. No one should live in a home that’s not aligned or misshapen. However, there are other crucial reasons you should square a room beyond the aesthetics. Here are a few of them.

Maximize Your Space

You are making the most of your home and space when you square a room. This is crucial if you want to make a large room cozier or want to make a small room seem larger.

Create Symmetry

Symmetry adds more aesthetics to the room to make it more visually appealing. So, squaring a room can make it more beautiful. Symmetry is also widely known to produce calming effects. This makes it highly beneficial for rooms meant for relaxation such as the bedroom, living room, etc.

Make a Formal Look

Squaring a room makes it look more formal than rooms with irregular or misshapen walls. If you intend to make a formal ambience in your room, squaring the room is an ideal way to do it.

Easier Placement of Furniture

Furniture will be easier to be placed and arrange if the room is squared. This is because there will be no awkward or uneven corners to deal with. You can even make it more symmetrical by placing the furniture in the middle of the room or against the wall. This can be helpful if you are not sure of how you want to arrange your furniture.
